subway kisses

My morning cycle usually takes me past a couple of subway stops. A frequent -- somewhat cynical -- game is to guess the relationship status of couples saying good-bye at the station.

  • Glancing, lips-puckered-but-barely-grazing-the-cheek as they go different directions: married a long, long time.
  • Quick hug, peck-on-the-lips, talking all the while, eye-crinkling smile: married or long-term relationship that's still vital.
  • Standing toe-to-toe, bodies touching, actually looking into each others eyes, several small quick kisses or one long lingering one: this is new or if it isn't, send the manual, please!
